Ozone treatments can be very beneficial to home owners who are looking to solve simple household problems that deal with odors, mold and air quality. Ozone is a natural cleaning agent known as an oxidizer and is over 50 times stronger than chlorine bleach and has an end product of pure oxygen and a deactivated cell or molecule. Ozone is emitted in gas form and the concentration is measured by parts per million (ppm). As a gas, ozone can circulate throughout an entire home in very little time, oxidizing as it goes eliminating; odors, killing germs and mold and actually improving the overall air quality of the home; however ozone must be treated with respect. As one of the most powerful oxidizers it should never be introduced into an environment where people are present, nor should you listen to any company or individual who says otherwise. There are reputable ozone treatment and generation companies out there who adhere to strict safety standards and provide quality services for homeowners across the country. These companies use UV based ozone generation systems that emit ozone above 150ppm as a general rule of thumb for residential treatments. UV ozone systems are by product free and will not damage any belongings in a customers home. (Corona ozone systems emit acidic by products that destroy plastic, leather and foams.)
A safe ozone treatment will consist of the following steps:
1. The ozone technician and home owner review the problem and location of the source.
2. The home owner decides on the appropriate treatment based on the suggestions of the ozone tech.
3. The ozone tech seals off external air flow form the home using paint safe materials.
4. The ozone generators are strategically placed to provide maximum benefit and the home is cleared of all people, pets and thin skinned plants. (orchids, pansies etc.)
5. The ozone tech starts the generators using a timer or manual switch just before he and the home owner leave the home and seal up the last exit door. (They should place warning signs on all external doors.)
6. The ozone tech and home owner meet back at the home after a prescribed amount of time and the tech tests the air for safe levels of ozone before allowing the home owner to enter.
7. The tech removes the generators and all materials and leaves the home owner with a clean fresh smelling home.
Ozone treatments are especially effective at removing odors like smoke, pet smell and mildew smell. Ozone is also capable of killing bacteria, viruses and mold and essentially disinfecting an entire home! This type of service has been used to clean homes of cancer patients who are susceptible to illnesses and poor air quality. Asthmatics also benefit from a clean indoor environment with improved air quality and less airborne mold; but should be extra cautious because they are sensitive to even safe levels of ozone.
