Charles Darwin is quoted to have said "A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life." This year we celebrate the 200th anniversary of this eminent man who presented to the world the theory of evolution.
The above quote can be looked at in many ways. For this man of science it was through the power of his meticulous observations that he made sense of what he had discovered. He viewed that the discipline of his mind as giving value to his life. It is curious how Charkes Darwin ties wasting one hour of time with not valuing life. This indeed was how he approached life. He had his definition of what he considered wasting time and he lived accordingly.
In life each one of us can decide how we value our lives. The results will be different for each of us because our definitions of what we value are varied. What I may consider valuable someone else may consider wasting time. For instance, I get enormous pleasure from spending an hour kayaking, delightful hours playing with my grandchildren, creating a special meal, getting absorbed in a good book, looking at the sunset, writing articles, etc. Our definitions of wasting time are as different as our ideas about the value of our life.
These differences in how we value life make life interesting. Yet there is another side to consider. For instance, we know when we are wasting hours that do not enhance the value of our lives. These may be the times when we watch mindless TV programs, make excuses for not pursuing what we know is right for us, or are just mindlessly lazying about. I am convinced that deep down each person knows the difference. When we do not put energy into growing our mind, spirit, and body we start mentally stagnating and emotionally feeling unfulfilled. Charles Darwin had his definition of wasting an hour and its impact on his value of life. Each one of us can decide how we spend our hour so it is not wasted but adds to the satisfaction of our lives.
