|
In 2009, the United States Mint helped celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln by issuing four different reverse designs for the penny and a special commemorative silver dollar. During 2010, two more coin designs will be issued to give collectors and Lincoln enthusiasts something to look forward to.
The 2009 Lincoln Cents were issued with four different reverse designs, each representing a different stage in the life of Abraham Lincoln. The designs were released periodically during the year and featured his birthplace and childhood spent in Kentucky, formative years spent in Indiana, professional life spent in Illinois, and his Presidency in Washington, DC. All coin releases were accompanied by official launch ceremonies that drew considerable crowds.
The 2009 Lincoln Silver Dollar Commemorative Coin was issued on February 12, 2009, to coincide with the exact 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The 90% silver coins were limited to a mintage of 500,000 coins and offered in proof and uncirculated qualities. They were offered directly by the United States Mint and sold out after about a month. The obverse of the coins featured a portrait of Lincoln and the reverse featured the closing words of the Gettysburg Address.
The 2010 coins will include a new design for the penny and a new circulating one dollar coin. The 2010 Lincoln Cent will feature a design emblematic of Lincoln's preservation of the United States as a single and united country. An image of the Union Shield has been chosen, which represents the original thirteen states joined as a single compact union. This new design is expected to be used on the one cent coin for the foreseeable future. The obverse of the coin will continue to bear the familiar likeness of Lincoln used since 1909.
The 2010 Lincoln Dollar will be issued as part of the ongoing Presidential Dollar coin series. This series began in 2007 to honor each of the former Presidents with a circulating one dollar coin, issued in the order served. The obverse of each coin features a portrait of the President and the reverse features a rendition of the Statue of Liberty. The Lincoln Dollar should be released into circulation in late 2010.
