Go Directly To The Source When Booking Hotels
Let's be honest. Funds are tight for many families right now and when it comes to summer holiday plans the sunny future can seem a little meek.
Of course there are the holidays you don't necessarily even plan for such as weddings, 50th Birthday celebrations, or corporate getaways. These can seem expensive enough just for yourself without adding in the rest of the family, your friends or even your dog.
One great thing to know about saving money on travel is how to save money on hotels. Besides flights, gas and food hotels are the biggest traveling expense and can add up quick if you include the taxes, room service, long distance phone calls and mini bar. Well, maybe lesson one is to stay completely away from your room's mini bar. If you really feel the need for your beverage of choice, even juice or bottled water, head to the local cold beer & wine, or corner store and save the hassle of explaining exactly how many miniature bottles of whiskey were used from the private bar.
Most hotels are affiliated with larger corporations and in this way they advertise savings such as early booking savers, special packages and special discounts such as AAA and AARP over a large number of hotel sites. No, not necessarily Travelocity or Expedia, but directly on the hotel's websites. While travel sites like Travelocity and Expedia make colourful announcements about the best hotel deals really what they do is search hotel sites and post them on their websites and many travel sites have deals with hotels where the hotel will offer them lower rates in exchange for the site making them more sales. This however doesn't mean you're actually saving anything. Many websites will add on processing costs and such to pay their commissions.
By heading directly to the hotel's website, or their parent website, you can view all the available offers, specials and packages, browse through them all and often come up with something that will save you considerable amounts of cash.
For example Wyndham is one of the largest hotel groups out there. Many franchises like Ramada, Days Inn, Super 8, Howard Johnson and Travelodge all belong to Wyndham and offer the same discounts. Can't find availability for the Days Inn in your chosen city? Try checking out one of the other associated hotels and you'll still be able to use the same promotional codes or discounts.
Wyndham also offers early booking savers. By booking at least seven days in advance at many of these lodgings you can receive 15 per cent of your stay. Most Wyndham hotels also offer 10 per cent off the Best Available Rate for AARP members, seniors and AAA/CAA members. Proof of membership is usually required at check-in so don't forget your cards or you won't be granted the discount.
Another way to potentially save money through hotels if you travel often or use the stores listed on their sites are rewards programs. Rewards programs allow for members to gain points through purchases such as hotel room stays, flights and certain stores or restaurants. After enough points are saved up, which can take a while if you only stay at hotels once in a while, they are redeemable for things like free hotel stays and flight discounts. The only hitch with rewards programs is that they are only useable for the hotel group they're bought through such as Starpoints for Starwood hotels.
Starpoints offer special deals for members such as the current "for every night you pay regular rate, you can get the next night at 50% off". Starpoints also offers a Preferred Guest program allowing early booking discounts, last minute bookings and no blackouts.
Starwood Hotels and Resorts includes Le Meridien, Four Points by Sheraton, Westin, The Luxury Collection, aloft Hotels, Sheraton, St. Regis and W Hotels. So by collecting Starpoints you gain new specials, and possibly free nights at any of these franchises.
Choice Hotels International is the other major player in the hotel world and includes accommodations such as Comfort Inn, Quality hotels, Clarion, Econo Lodge and Suburban. Choice also offers a rewards program called Choice Priveleges and since they are located worldwide you have the option of saving money or redeeming points for free stays overseas. AAA, AARP and seniors discounts are also available through these hotels.
If you're thinking international for your holidays this summer Best Western is offering an Early Internet Special where travelers save 15 to 30 per cent of the BestRate on locations all over Europe if they booke 21 days in advance. Best Western also offers the best AAA and CAA rates of 20 per cent off.
Las Vegas is famous for deals. The Wynn and Encore Las Vegas hotels, awarded five stars by Forbes, offers an excellent deal if you plan your trip ahead of time. By booking 45 days in advance travelers receive 25 per cent of the cost of accommodations.
In this day and age where nothing comes cheap, it's important to know that there are always deals to be found. As far as hotels are concerned, booking directly off their website is the best way to obtain great savings and qualify for discounts with no added hitch. If you travel lots, consider a rewards program and save more money in the long run. Searching hotels may take you a bit longer when you're hunting for deals but it becomes a fun challenge and one that definitely pays off.

Cents and Sustainability $39.95 Cents and Sustainability is a clear-sighted response to the 1987 call by Dr Gro Brundtland in Our Common Future to achieve a new era of economic growth that is 'forceful and at the same time socially and environmentally sustainable'. The Brundtland Report argued that not only was it achievable, but that it was an urgent imperative in order to achieve a transition to sustainable development while significantly reducing poverty and driving 'clean and green' investment. With some still arguing for significantly slowing economic growth in order to reduce pressures on the environment, this new book, Cents and Sustainability, shows that it is possible to reconcile the need for economic growth and environmental sustainability through a strategy to decouple economic growth from environmental pressures, combined with a renewed commitment to achieve significant environmental restoration and poverty reduction. Beginning with a brief overview of some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, the book then explains 'decoupling theory', overviews a number of factors that can undermine and even block efforts to decouple in both developed and developing countries, and then discusses a number of key considerations to assist the development of national 'decoupling strategies'. The book then focuses on presenting evidence to support greater action, not just on climate change, but also on decoupling economic growth from the loss of biodiversity and the deterioration of natural systems, freshwater extraction, waste production, and air pollution. In the lead up to the 2012 United Nations Earth Summit and beyond, Cents and Sustainability will be a crucial guide to inform and assist nations to develop strategies to significantly reduce environmental pressures, strengthen their economy, create jobs and reduce poverty. 'I commend the team from The Natural Edge Project and their partners for undertaking to develop a response to 'Our Common Future' to mark its 20th anniversary.'
