You know, Father's Day in Australia is in September.
Last year it was great to get a few special presents from my little boy.
Among the magazines and new t-shirt's the most valuable thing I received was a tin pencil case with wool wrapped around it.
It probably cost about 50 cents in materials, but there's something about a gift which a child puts their heart and pride into which makesit so valuable. And the look on my son's face when I told him I would take it to work and tell everyone who asked that it was a very special pencil case because my little boy had given it to me.
Being a father really is a special thing.
And yesterday, I took a moment to reflect on what made my own father so special.
Of course, like any father (including me) he had his faults.
But one of those faults was not his ability to care, love and give time to those he loved.
For instance, when I was about 8 or 9 years old we moved to a little town in the Northern Territory called Nhullunbuy. Now it was a town of about 4,000 people. And unlike most areas of larger populations, it didn't have everything in terms of sport.
So as a kid who was mad keen on cricket, there was nothing there for me. So you know what my dad did? He started up a cricket club just so I could follow that passion.
He gave up his Saturday's just for me.
Now I think that's pretty special. Especially since I believe that once we left that area, the era of cricket ended (at least for a period of time).
So I want to take a moment to not only thank my dad for being a selfless father... for taking us away on weekends... for taking an interest in my sport... and for always being there for me when I asked for help.
But to thank all fathers who give of themselves with no expectation of getting anything back in return.
And also to reflect on something which virtually every religion and spiritual tradition agrees with:
The more you give, the more you receive.
So take a moment to think of what you can give to both your clients, your family and your friends today.
From a business standpoint, perhaps you could...
- send your top clients a good book
- call one of your past clients and ask them "how are things?"
- forward this email to someone who might find it useful or interesting
- put your thinking cap on and do one hours worth of complimentary consulting to a leading client - give them ideas and strategies without expectation of anything in return and you'll be amazed at what comes back
- send out an email to your database with some tips and hints for your industry
- Organise and promote a teleseminar with some useful information
I could go on and on.
The important thing to remember is to always focus on giving. Even smiling or saying hello to someone at the right time can make a huge difference to someone's day.
And on Father's Day, don't forget to take a moment to think of just how much your father or son has given to you over the years and acknowledge them for it.
After all, acknowledgement and appreciation can be one of the most valuable gifts of all.

100 Per Cent Renewable $56 The greatest challenge of our time is to build a world based on the sustainable use of renewable power. Our massive dependence on fossil fuels has upset the very climatic system that made human evolution possible. The global economy and its financial system are in jeopardy, running hot on overtly cheap yet increasingly costly and fast depleting oil. A 100% renewable world is seen by many as an impossible dream in anything but the very long term. But not only do a growing number of initiatives and plans dare to make the change but many have already achieved it.This rich collection presents a series of pioneering efforts and their champions, and the paths to their successes. Ranging from initiatives by individuals to visions for companies, communities and entire countries, it defeats tired economic and technical counter-arguments, showing how the schemes featured not only can and do work but do so economically and with available technology. The book is introduced by incisive writing by Peter Droege, explaining the challenges and framing a roadmap towards a 100% renewable reality. |

50 Cent - Who Dares Wins (DVD) $30.21 After a storied history to which most rappers merely pay lip service, 50 Cent has shot to the top of the charts and made headlines almost constantly, after first gaining exposure by being taken under the wing of Run DMC`s Jam Master Jay. Later he was signed jointly by Eminem and Dr. Dre, whose endorsements sealed 50`s fate as the hottest thing to hit hip hop in a very long time. But things didn`t always go so smoothly for the svelte, streetwise rapper; his first attempt at fame was cut short by a brutal attempt on his life, which rendered him a pariah in the industry and a hero of the underground for years. With a tenacity that backs up his boasts to an unheard of degree, 50 Cent has more than made good on his 2003 album, GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN`. The unauthorized documentary WHO DARES WINS uses interviews with those in the know, as well as previously-unseen footage, to detail the process by which 50 overcame unheard-of obstacles to become one of the most sought-after rappers in recent history. |
