When Boulton and Watt added their chapter to the history of the penny, a coin has been created that was both sophisticated in its production and flawless execution, but disarmingly simple intrinsic.
The pounding rhythm of the piece of steam presses in the factory Soho has announced a technical marvel. The parts were produced, up to 84 pieces a minute, well struck with images of a monarch side, and the goddess Britannia on the other.
It is also true that the new pieces were quite large, especially when compared to the silver coins old, whose degradation over time is a piece of copper a possible alternative. These discs were heavy unalloyed copper, sized so that their metal value equaled their face value. Two cents of copper in 1797 produced a coin that work well as clipboard.
Large piece of copper was standard issue for the new U.S. Mint in Philadelphia since 1793. They were not as Large parts only in English, being closer in size to the half penny coins minted private common in Britain and a number of questions Colonial U.S.. Unlike coins English mint Soho, American coins were, until 1836, struck on presses screw hand operated.
Although "penny" has never been official verbiage in America (the rooms were a " cent "pieces) from the British colonial experience is pacing for the public, even today.
The U.S. cents and pence English organized a parallel course, during which each was subsequently converted into more durable bronze (copper alloyed with tin).
And thus the size of the penny has been considerably reduced, although much earlier in America than in Britain. Companies Modern U.S. cent to 19 mm made his first appearance as the Flying Eagle cents of 1856. More exactly, the modern diameter only, as the Flying Eagles were thicker than this piece, and made from a hard working but very durable copper-nickel alloy.
The Flying Eagles gave way to one hundred Indian Head in 1859, and the hundred Lincoln in 1909. Bronze back in 1864, continues with only one interruption in 1962. The interruption was a galvanized steel percent in 1943, with copper diverted to the war effort. In 1962, tin was removed from the alloy for 5% zinc, copper remains.
In 1982, expenditure on strike in the production of the American penny has become critical. Rather than abolishing the penny altogether, Congress allowed for a piece of zinc of 97.4% with a coating of 2.4% copper. As the coins "copper's nose" Silver Henry VIII coins zinc have a reputation rather mottled. Collectors observed the surface of the zinc cents bites, and even boiling, in sealed mint.
In Britain the penny has outlived the decimalization of 1971 and is now as a piece of steel, barely covered with copper. penny bronze were used in some modern proof sets.
The future the penny in America is certain that until 2009, when four versions of the Lincoln cent will be issued for the bicentenary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.

My background in coins is that I've collected coins since age 11 -- so, more than half a century. Coins have been a pleasant distraction over the years. Though I've never been a coin dealer, I have occasionally sold a coin or two at a nice profit, when the market was right. These experiences have taught me a bit about coin value in the marketplace. But I have to say that my greatest pleasure with coins has been the hooks they have to history and other areas of learning. And, I can never quite get beyond the feeling that, if any of my coins could talk, the stories would be priceless!

It was struck at all three mints; Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Coins from the latter two sites have respectively D and S mintmarks below the date..
