Persecution of minorities has high-lighted the history of the world and the lessons of struggling humanity since two-legged mammals left the caves, became hunter-gatherers, then farmers, villagers, city-dwellers - and intolerant of "outsiders". From the perspective of a continually persecuted people, the total number of Jews living at any given time narrates the story of civilization's growth and decline. Two thousand years ago, at the peak of the glory of Greece and Rome, historians say Jews numbered eight million. Israel was then conquered by Rome, Jerusalem was sacked and the phrase "Wandering Jew" described their dispersion over the globe. Then, civilization ebbed and flowed, there came the Magna Carta and the Dark Ages. "The Jews killed our Christ" was the cry of rampaging hordes; then, "Jews slay our children for their Passover matzoh"; came the Inquisition and pogroms - and the number of Jews rose painfully yet slowly (not quite doubling in over 70 generations) - to the 1930 pre-Hitler level of fifteen million. Then came the Holocaust - no homeland or haven for Jews - and in 1945, with the remnant European survivors, only nine million Jews remained. Today, three generations later, only about fourteen million Jews live, divided primarily between the US and Israel.
As society developed, Jew-hatred has been dominant among persecuted minorities. But then, humanity became more civilized and a League of Nations was established, supposedly to solve international disputes by rational discourse and to eliminate irrational hatreds. For the ever-persecuted, haven-less Jews, a British Mandate was established to finally provide a Jewish homeland - and it was to be in the Mid-East, in the biblical-land of the Hebrews, part of the territory from which the Jews had been expelled by Rome two millennia before. For two four-century-long eras, the territory had been part of the Byzantine Empire, then the Ottoman Empire (thus, contradicting anti-Israel propaganda of Jewish "illegal settlements" usurping Arab land - there has never been a Palestinian country - other than Jordan).
British consciences for homeless Jews was short-lived however, whereupon Britain, openly favoring the influential Arab League, gave over its responsibility for the Mandate to the United Nations - but only after awarding 70 % of Mandate Area to the Arabs, establishing the country of TransJordan (now Jordan). Then came Hitler, his Hebrew-hatred a fury, and Jews by the millions were murdered, first by firing squads, then with cold-blooded, assembly-line efficiency - special trains to special death camps; gas chambers and ovens reducing human bodies to ashes - and American soldiers who liberated the death camps - although hardened by years of war - were horrified at the stacks of gaunt skeletons. Even Jew-haters felt (temporarily) guilty at the news-reel footage. Six million Jews had been murdered - only a token saved from gas chambers by the supposedly civilized world: 20,000 children each by the US and England; a sanctuary-seeking ship of desperate German-Jews (the St. Louis) turned away from US shores in 1939, a thousand being sent back to Hitler (only 22 permitted entry). Because there was no Jewish homeland any place in the world, and no country would offer asylum, the civilized world watched as forty per-cent of the ancient Jewish people were annihilated.
United Nations, Jews, Palestinian Arabs and World Refugees. The shocking reality of Jewish children and women being cold-bloodedly killed because there was no refuge for them anywhere on Earth, shocked the consciences of world leaders - for a time), thus the remaining portion of the Mandate area was then split and offered to both Jews and Palestinian Arabs. The Jews accepted, creating Israel; the Arabs rejected the offer, then attacked Israel: 1949, 1956, 1967, 1973 - the bloody and strife-laden history of the Mid-East.
Six Decades of Israel. What is truly remarkable are Israel's accomplishments during its brief six decades of constantly-threatened existence (practically no outside help, other than fellow religionists in the US). While the tiny country of six million Jews was constantly defending itself: internally, against Islamic suicide bombers in malls and on school busses; externally against hostile military threats from Arab neighbors, or rocket attacks from Lebanon or Gaza; continually fending off diplomatic criticism at the UN or against shouting liberals at Eastern universities - meanwhile Israeli citizens managed to also sing and dance and play (and serve in the Israel Defense Forces) - and work. Israel has created more symphony orchestras, museums and universities, with more PhDs than all Arab countries combined. More books have been translated into Hebrew than the billion plus Muslims have translated into Arabic. Israel, meanwhile, also absorbed all penniless Jewish refugees from devastated Europe, plus the Jews expelled from Mediterranean Moslem countries (no Jewish refugee wards of the UN). In addition, in only a few decades of "cold" peace with Egypt, Jordan and Syria, Israel has achieved an advanced standard of living with freedoms and rights for its citizens (including Arabs), attained 1st world industrial prosperity, advanced world knowledge and expertise in medicine, pharmacology, and electronics. Israel has created more new entrepreneurial technology ventures and obtained more patents than any European country or the combined total of all the Arab-Muslim countries, second only to the United States.
