Are IT graduates getting higher grades?
New figures have suggested that more IT graduates are achieving higher grades.
As thousands of students are finding out their degree results this month and donning their caps for the graduation ceremony, data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency has shown that there has been nearly a 10% rise in people taking computer science degrees achieving above a 2:1 since 1995.
It revealed that in 1995/96, 42.4 per cent of IT students were awarded a first or upper second class degree, while in 2008/09 this figure rose to 51 per cent, the BBC reported.
Computer science was not the only subject found to have more students achieving top grades.
Mathematical sciences saw a rise of 12.1 percentage points, while biology increased by around three percentage points.
Commenting on the figures, Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of Universities UK told the BBC: "Attainment, whether at A level or through other routes, has been rising over the same period.
"In addition, there is a widespread perception among many students that they need 'the essential 2:1' to be even considered by employers. That has undoubtedly driven students to work hard, which should be praised."
This could come as welcome news to university-leavers who are competing for jobs with not only their own year, but many of last year's students as well.
According to High Fliers, there are now on average 45 applications for every job, so getting a good grade is increasingly important for jobseekers.
And a survey by the Association of Graduate Recruiters reported recently that 78 per cent of employers are seeking candidates with at least a 2:1 degree.
One way to get ahead of the crowd could be to do an internship or work experience. Many companies hold recruitment fairs and events where graduates have the opportunity to learn more about the industry and explore possible career opportunities.
While many students find that they are unable to work unpaid for any length of time, this could be due to change.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has called for a minimum of at least £2.50 an hour for a "training wage", arguing that it will help to promote social mobility through encouraging people from poorer backgrounds to apply.
Johnny Rich, publisher of realworldmagazine.com, commented: "Some companies exploit interns horrifically and basically treat them as extra employees without paying them or giving them any additional expertise.
"It's reasonable to expect somebody to pay with their time and effort in order to gain skills, but it is not reasonable to just use them as cheap labour."
He noted that many interns take the place of a paid employee and should, therefore, be paid to reflect this.
For students experience such as this could boost their 2:1 degree even further and get them in the door with a company.

Graded Syzygies $124 The study of free resolutions is a core and beautiful area in Commutative Algebra. The main goal of this book is to inspire the readers and develop their intuition about syzygies and Hilbert functions. Many examples are given in order to illustrate ideas and key concepts. A valuable feature of the book is the inclusion of open problems and conjectures; these provide a glimpse of exciting, and often challenging, research directions in the field. Three types of problems are presented: Conjectures, Problems, and Open-Ended Problems. The latter do not describe specific problems but point to interesting directions for exploration. The first part of the monograph contains basic background material on graded free resolutions. Further coverage of topics includes syzygies over a polynomial ring, resolutions over quotient rings, lex ideals and Hilbert functions, compression, resolutions of monomial ideals, and syzygies of toric ideals. With a clear and self-contained exposition this text is intended for advanced graduate students and postdoctorates; it will be also of interest to senior mathematicians. |
