The Ten-Cent Plague $9.99 In the years between World War II and the emergence of television as a mass medium, American popular culture as we know it was first created--in the pulpy, boldly illustrated pages of comic books. No sooner had this new culture emerged than it was beaten down by church groups, community bluestockings, and a McCarthyish Congress--only to resurface with a crooked smile on its face in Mad magazine. The story of the rise and fall of those comic books has never been fully told--until The Ten-Cent Plague . David Hajdu's remarkable new book vividly opens up the lost world of comic books, its creativity, irreverence, and suspicion of authority. When we picture the 1950s, we hear the sound of early rock and roll. The Ten-Cent Plague shows how--years before music--comics brought on a clash between children and their parents, between prewar and postwar standards. Created by outsiders from the tenements, garish, shameless, and often shocking, comics spoke to young people and provided the guardians of mainstream culture with a big target. Parents, teachers, and complicit kids burned comics in public bonfires. Cities passed laws to outlaw comics. Congress took action with televised hearings that nearly destroyed the careers of hundreds of artists and writers. The Ten-Cent Plague radically revises common notions of popular culture, the generation gap, and the divide between "high" and "low" art. As he did with the lives of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington (in Lush Life ) and Bob Dylan and his circle (in Positively 4th Street ), Hajdu brings a place, a time, and a milieu unforgettably back to life. |

100 Per Cent Renewable $56 The greatest challenge of our time is to build a world based on the sustainable use of renewable power. Our massive dependence on fossil fuels has upset the very climatic system that made human evolution possible. The global economy and its financial system are in jeopardy, running hot on overtly cheap yet increasingly costly and fast depleting oil. A 100% renewable world is seen by many as an impossible dream in anything but the very long term. But not only do a growing number of initiatives and plans dare to make the change but many have already achieved it.This rich collection presents a series of pioneering efforts and their champions, and the paths to their successes. Ranging from initiatives by individuals to visions for companies, communities and entire countries, it defeats tired economic and technical counter-arguments, showing how the schemes featured not only can and do work but do so economically and with available technology. The book is introduced by incisive writing by Peter Droege, explaining the challenges and framing a roadmap towards a 100% renewable reality. |

Creat Innov 21st Cent Ruec13h $249.8 In the wake of the dotcom shakeout of 2000, the time is ripe for a reappraisal of how information technology (IT) has created new environments for businesses and workers in the US and Europe. This book draws on the experiences of the 1990s to discern successful strategies for competing and winning in the New Economy. The lessons are most sharply defined in specific regional clusters of innovation. Accordingly, contributors are mainly onthescene observers and practitioners from Silicon Valley, New England and Europe. The common theme is the attempt to find innovative ways (in part through nontraditional business models) to create and build increasingly networked, flexible, participatory companies. Drawing on the notion of entrepreneurial behavior as the pursuit of goals that are beyond the means currently available, the collection examines management, leadership, and innovation issues in startup and established companies alike. While recognizing the hard realities of the new competition, the book highlights emerging winwin scenarios. Enabled in part by the new IT systems, these new approaches help companies succeed by seeking and rewarding decisionmaking, initiative and creativity on the part of all employees. Author: Norton, R. Comp to 20th Cent Music PB $26.85 Twentieth century music has been remarkable for its pluralism. The various stylesatonality, neoclassicism, nationalism, serialism, jazz, computer music, minimalism, electronics, folklorism, happenings, sheer chancehave been far from monolithic, and experimentation has been, perhaps, the centurys only defining feature. With over 2500 entries, The Companion to 20thCentury Music is the first book to comprehensively define and applaud this diversity. Norman Lebrecht celebrates variety and innovation, assessing composers and musicians according to artistic merit rather than ideological or institutional eminence. He states that his purpose is to demythologize, to enlighten, and to entertain, so he writes in a readable, narrative style, free of jargon and abbreviations. The end result is the perfect companion to the music of our time.
