The Outer Banks of North Carolina is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation spots on the East Coast. One word comes to mind when I think of the Outer Banks, it is breathtaking! And, I am sure when you visit you will agree!
There are many things to do when you visit the natural beauty of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is full of history, sightseeing adventures, majestic lighthouses, and even wild ponies! But, if you want to just get away from it all and relax, with uncrowded beaches, then this is definitely one of the best places to do nothing at all. The islands are a great place to take the family or the perfect place for a romantic getaway. The beautiful, white sandy beaches are extremely clean and you will feel like you truly are away from the hustle bustle of the city.
The four main islands that make up the Outer Banks are Hatteras Island, Bodie Island, Ocracoke Island, and Roanoke Island. Ocracoke Island is only accessible via private boat, air, or ferry. Each island displays their famous Southern charm with points of interest and history galore. The beautiful Atlantic Ocean is the main attraction, but you will find wonderful food, great little shops with special souvenirs, and historic tours. You can even go on a dolphin tour!
Do you like historic museums? Then be sure to put Blackbeard's Museum on your list of things to do! And, if you have a fascination with lighthouses, you will find Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Ocracoke Lighthouse, and Currituck Lighthouse. Some of the lighthouses allow you to climb to the top for a picturesque view of the islands.
Many visitors refer to the Outer Banks as a fisherman's paradise, and is known as the "Blue Marlin Capitol of the World". Whether you are "hooked" on pier fishing, surf fishing, fly fishing, sound or offshore fishing, the Outer Banks has it all! No matter what your skill level, or if you have never gone fishing before, then the islands are the perfect place to give it a try!
A wide variety of accommodations include beach houses, romantic bed and breakfast, cottages, campgrounds, and hotels. You will find very few major hotel chains in the Outer Banks, though. And, there are many places to stay that will fit everyone's budget.
Like the sand? The famous Jockey Ridge is one of the top landmarks of the Outer Banks and the largest natural sand dune on the East Coast. You can view the hang-gliders showing off their skills, and lessons are offered if you want to try it yourself. They also have hiking trails to explore, and remember the sand is extremely hot, so be sure to wear shoes.
