Canadian Two

Numbers clearly indicate that last year was a very successful one for Canadian real estate market. Sales climbed over 520 000 units, up 7.6 percent from 2006 levels. This was the largest growth since 2002. Transactions via the MLS systems have reached more than 500,000 units sold. The average real estate sale price was up by 14.1% to $317,825 in December 2007 when compared to December 2006

However, year 2008 opened a number of questions. It wasn't only the US real estate market bubble, but also oil and food price problems that made many people believe recession is knocking at the back door again.

Canadian economy has slowed down a bit at the end of 2007 and GDP growth for Q1 2008 was negative: -0.1 per cent. Reasons? Export level is to blame, for one. Due to problems in Canada's biggest partner, USA and weak US dollar, exports went down. Rising commodity prices are actually not bad for Canada. Fossil fuel costs are rising, that is why more and more nuclear power plants are being built in the world. And Canada is world's top uranium supplier, covering 25% of the world's needs.

The biggest world economy and our nearest and the most important neighbour is USA. Canada wants to know if we can experience the same real estate problems as our neighbour.

But who is to blame for the real estate crisis in the States?

After the Dot-com bubble and 9/11 events, FED interest rates fell to 1% and real estate started booming. It was very easy to get subprime mortgages. Properties were overpriced and than the bubble bursted - everybody knows the story. Is this what the future holds for Canada, too?

Well, not quite.

Subprime mortgages are the biggest difference. They can generally be defined as mortgages offered when home purchasers do not fit the banks' prime mortgage customer profile. While they cover about 20% in USA, Canadians seem much more conservative in this question - similar mortgages create about 5% of the market. Canadian loan policies are more strict than in the USA. The most dangerous are "teaser" mortgages that offer low initial rates, then

later reset at a higher level, or other mortgages made to individuals with minimal income and no coverage contributed to the crisis substantially. These products are not common in Canada, however, new ones emerged on the Canadian market recently and subprime segment is expected to double in next five years.

Lower numbers of sales and rising new listings seen recently are obvious. The question is, whether it's just simple trend correction, or bubble losing air faster and faster.

Predictions by experts remain optimistic. Resales are expected to drop, but still supposed to remain above 465,000 in every of next two years. Decline in new starts is expected as well, but with numbers still above past years average.

Interest rates are not supposed to change substantially. A cut from 3.0% was expected in June and may be still possible in the near future. On the other hand, other commodity price turmoil may raise inflation and consequently interest rates in the future, making mortgages more expensive.

Net migration is believed to remain on high level of about 200,000 people. People who will search for homes on the market! On the other hand, Canada's birth rate is decreasing, potentially lowering future demand for housing.

Baby boomers: First baby boomers from the 1947-1966 period will retire. The question is whether they will look up for recreational property in Canada, or sell their house and move to Costa Rica?

Energy prices: probably will influence the structure of demand in the future. Energy consuming huge houses in distant suburbs will be pushed by inner city modern condos.

Everybody should make his or her own conclusion based on the above facts. Canadian real estate is slowing down now and market is turning from strictly seller driven to balanced one, with more affordable housing. However, buying real estate will be still a good investment, with price growth beating the inflation rate.

An English Canadian is a Canadian whose principal language is English or who is of English ancestry; it is used primarily in contrast with French Canadian. Canada is an officially bilingual and multicultural country, with French and English official language communities. Immigrant cultural groups ostensibly integrate into one or both of these communities, but often retaining elements of their original cultures. Although many Englishspeaking Canadians have strong historical roots traceable to the British Isles, they belong to a multitude of ethnicities. They or their ancestors came from various European, Asian, Caribbean, African, Latin American, and Pacific Island cultures, as well as French Canada and North American Aboriginal groups. As such, although the office of the Governor General is said to alternate between French and English persons, the two most recent Governors General (Adrienne Clarkson, an Englishspeaking Chinese Canadian; and Michalle Jean, a Frenchspeaking Haitian Canadian) show that this refers to language and not culture or ethnicity. "The field of Canadian Studies is a growing discipline, particularly in the United States. This introductory text offers a thorough and accessible approach to Canadian Studies through comparative analyses of Canada and the United States, their histories, geographies, political systems, economies, and cultures. Among the topics addressed are ways in which Canadian national development has been influenced by the U.S., the role of geography in shaping the country`s evolution, and the persistent question of Canada`s French-speaking minority, which has been an important and divisive issue since the 1500s.Canadian Studies in the New Millennium is an excellent introduction to Canadian Studies, with chapters written by leading scholars and educators in the field. At a time in which there is a growing mutual dependence between the U.S. and Canada for security, trade, and investment, this text is an ideal tool for understanding the close relationship between the two countries, their shared experiences, and their differing views.Canadian Studies in the New Millennium will be of significant value to students, educators, and practitioners. Canadian Local Government (Paperback)

Canadian Local Government (Paperback)

$108.77

Canadian Local Government is a new ground-up text that focuses on local governments as political institutions. Its objective is to attempt to answer all of the big questions political scientists ask about other political institutions: How are local governments defined? Why do we have them? What do they do? How do they relate to other political institutions? How is power attained and distributed within them? With a strong and powerful voice, Sancton answers these questions by assuming that we need to know as much about how our local governments work as we do about other levels of government and their influences. Part One of the book is concerned with the legal and political framework of Canadian local government. Part Two examines how structures of local government are adapted to urbanization. Part Three is about power, politics, and management within major Canadian municipalities, and Part Four discusses money, a subject particularly important at the local level. Sancton concludes his text by addressing issues that relate to the future of Canadian local government and theorizes that knowing about Canadian local government facilitates urban living.

Canadian Labour Congress

Canadian Labour Congress

$76.47

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Canadian Labour Congress, or CLC (in French le Congrs du travail du Canada or CTe is a national trade union center, the central labour body in Canada to which most Canadian labour unions are affiliated. The CLC was founded on April 23, 1956 through a merger of the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada (TLe and the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL), the two major labour congresses in Canada at the time. The TLCs affiliated unions represented workers in a specific trade while the CCLs affiliated unions represented all employees within a workplace, regardless of occupation. The tradesbased organizational model, which strongly continues today especially in the building and construction industries, is based in older European traditions that can be traced back to guilds. However, with industrialization came the creation of a new group of workers without specific trades qualifications and, therefore, without ready access to the representation offered by the TLCs affiliates. In response, these workers adopted the industrial model of union organization and formed the CCL as their umbrella aorganization. Weaving a Canadian Allegory

Weaving a Canadian Allegory

$85

Loretta Czernis applies her sociological training in document analysis to study one government prescription for what ails Canadians. The Report of the Task Force on Canadian Unity rewrote Canada by reinventing patriotism, essentially inviting Canadians to imagine a new Canada. The Report itself is the product of what she calls the “federal writing machine” which exists to continually rewrite and thus reinvent Canada. Czernis’ contextual reading of the Report occurs on two levels: reading technically, she examines the Report ’s anonymous writing style that asks readers to imitate its own conclusions (be patriotic, buy a flag, shop at home). Gestural reading invites reading as performance. Canadians are invited to participate in reshaping Canada by reading Canada allegorically, as a social body, capable of changing its form. What a document may intend is not always the same as what is read into it. Mistakes can and do occur in the reading. Czernis suggests that these “mistakes” constitute a significant form of resistance to the anonymous writing machine. Weaving a Canadian Allegory will be of special interest to Canadianists, sociologists and to those involved in cultural, political and textual studies.

Violet Archer: A Canadian Woman in Composition.

Violet Archer: A Canadian Woman in Composition.

$115.71

As one of the first women in Canada to pursue composition and the teaching of composition as a full time career, Violet Archer created a fresh approach to Canadian music, while still working in an international style. This dissertation explores Archers experiences as a female composer in Canada in the 20th century, and how she explored her Canadian identity in both her life and her music. The first chapter is a brief biography of Violet Archer with particular emphasis on the events that shaped her life and career, and includes an introduction to her music and musical style. Chapter Two identifies trends in the history of Western Art Music composition in Canada from its beginnings to the present. The histories of composition in Western Canada and of Canadian female composers are also considered, in order to provide a background to the place of Archers contemporaries in Canada. Chapter Three examines Archers experiences as a composer and specifically how being Canadian and a woman affected her life and career. The fourth chapter explores the intersections between national identity and Canadian music. Among other things, the development of a Canadian musical style and the varying concepts of what constitutes Canadian music are considered. Chapter Five delves specifically into how Archer made her own music Canadian by examining three works in detail: Northern Landscape (1951), Ten Folk Songs for Four Hands (1953), and Prairie Profiles (1980). This not only places Archers work in a national context, but concerns how these works reflect her particular world and musical view. This dissertation concludes that in the breadth and variety of her work, and in the determination with which she pursued and developed her talent, Violet Archer was both unique and the embodiment of a particularly Canadian spirit. Canadian Women in Print, 17501918

Canadian Women in Print, 17501918

$85

Canadian Women in Print, 1750—1918 is the first historical examination of women? engagement with multiple aspects of print over some two hundred years, from the settlers who wrote diaries and letters to the New Women who argued for ballots and equal rights. Considering women? published writing as an intervention in the public sphere of national and material print culture, this book uses approaches from book history to address the working and living conditions of women who wrote in many genres and for many reasons. This study situates English Canadian authors within an extensive framework that includes francophone writers as well as women? work as compositors, bookbinders, and interveners in public access to print. Literary authorship is shown to be one point on a spectrum that ranges from missionary writing, temperance advocacy, and educational texts to journalism and travel accounts by New Woman adventurers. Familiar figures such as Susanna Moodie, L.M. Montgomery, Nellie McClung, Pauline Johnson, and Sara Jeannette Duncan are contextualized by writers whose names are less well known (such as Madge Macbeth and Agnes Laut) and by many others whose writings and biographies have vanished into the recesses of history. Readers will learn of the surprising range of writing and publishing performed by early Canadian women under various ideological, biographical, and cultural motivations and circumstances. Some expressed reluctance while others eagerly sought literary careers. Together they did much more to shape Canada? cultural history than has heretofore been recognized.

Soon afterwards, Schumacher passed Berger with Patrese following him through five laps later. The order stabilised at: Prost, Hill, Senna, Schumacher, Patrese and Berger. During the midrace stops, Hill had a problem and dropped behind Senna and Schumacher. Schumacher now set off after Senna.
