Its always difficult when you try to meet people, especially when you want to just walk up to someone and introduce yourself to them. There may be times when working on the floor of a Factory or in the Office and you see some VIP's are coming through your department. Your intrigued and you start popping your head up and around trying to get a glance and see whos here. Just then a thought pops into your head and you remember that your Career Coach said you should never miss an opportunity to meet every CEO/VIP/Visitor you can. Especially those touring your department.
THE MEET AND GREET
There are two basic techniques I use; the first technique is to always ask a QUESTION. The second technique is to find something that you both have in common, which is done by getting them to answer yes to my questions. I ask questions that I hope to get a yes to, its impossible to disagree with anyone your saying yes to. Questions can also help your presence feel casual and routine and non-threatening when applicable.
When trying to discuss what you have in common you will try to create a feeling thats like talking to an old friend, that's what its like when you talk to someone who shares the same interest as you. Its Fun to talk to them about your passion, or interest, right? And its powerful when you get them saying yes as well. Its hard to stop saying yes when you keep doing it.
Almost everyone will reveal something about themselves if you ask. Don't worry if you find after a question or two that you cant find anything in common without having to grill them to find out. Just continue to ask questions to get to know each other. The worst thing they could say is "This is not a good time to discuss this' if that happens apologize for the inconvenience and say 'Well I hope your day goes well, let me know if I can help you with anything' And than move on, no loss to you, but don't stop trying at another time.
WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO?
Consider what you could gain if you where to have a few minutes of the CEO's or other VIP's attention. Even if only for a minute or two, they will warm up to and get to know you, they will listen to your ideas and share suggestions of their own with you. Essentially by walking up to them and having a discussion you are calling an impromptu meeting. If your smart here you will bring the agenda with you and you will most likely receive the benefits as well.
Well good luck and let me know if I can help.
