Maybe I'm just a wild and crazy guy, but I've always been a big fan of Steve Martin movies. Ever since he debuted as a banjo-playing comedian back in the '70s, I've followed his career with great interest and amusement. I was a bit skeptical when he first made the transition to film, but he quickly won me over with such absurd classics as The Jerk and The Man with Two Brains. As the years have passed, Martin has also proven himself adept at more dramatic roles, and his musical endeavors even earned him a Grammy in 2009 for Best Bluegrass Album.
Now I hope to share my passion for Steve Martin movies with you. Below, I've selected eight films that I feel sum up his lengthy Hollywood career. Give them a try, and I'm betting you'll soon be a fan of the white-haired funnyman.
The Jerk (1979) - Martin makes his feature film debut in this tale of a nave white guy adopted into a family of black sharecroppers. Heading to the big city to pursue his destiny, he falls in love, gets stalked by a crazed sniper, makes a fortune, and generally behaves like a moron. Co-starring Bernadette Peters and M. Emmet Walsh.
Bowfinger (1999) - A small time movie producer (Martin) wants to direct his own movie. Limited to a tiny budget, he schemes to get action hero Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy) to star in his project...without Ramsey even knowing about it. Co-starring Heather Graham, Robert Downey, Jr., and Jamie Kennedy.
L.A. Story (1991) - Martin plays a shallow weatherman in this sly satire of life in Los Angeles. With a freeway sign offering him occasional advice, he romantically pursues a British journalist (Victoria Tennant) and airhead model (Sarah Jessica Parker). Richard E. Grant, Patrick Stewart, and Kevin Pollak co-star.
The Man with Two Brains (1983) - A brilliant brain surgeon, Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr (Martin), falls in and out of love with a sadistic gold-digger (Kathleen Turner) in this bizarre comedy. When he finally meets his true soul mate (voiced by Sissy Spacek), he's dismayed to learn that she's nothing but a brain in a jar. Keep an eye out for Merv Griffin's outrageously funny cameo.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) - Martin and Michael Caine are a pair of rival con-artists who both set out to scam a pretty heiress out of her fortune. The plot of this charming comedy closely follows that of Bedtime Story, which starred David Niven and Marlon Brando.
All of Me (1984) - Martin and Lily Tomlin co-star as a lawyer and dying millionairess respectively. Thanks to a little magic, the spirit of Tomlin winds up possessing the right side of his body, while he retains control of the left. The two leads would reunite in 2009 for The Pink Panther 2.
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) - Steve Martin and John Candy team up in front of the cameras, while John Hughes works his magic as both writer and director. The stars play very different men who are both trying to get home for the Thanksgiving holidays. Deciding to join forces, they're beset by one hilarious misfortune after another.
Roxanne (1987) - Based on the play Cyrano de Bergerac, this film tells the story of C.D. Bales (Martin), a multi-talented fire chief who's incredibly sensitive about his oversized nose. When he falls for Roxanne (Daryl Hannah), he writes her poetry and allows it to be passed off by a hunky-yet-dimwitted fireman.
I hope you've enjoyed this look at some of the best Steve Martin movies. As the comic/actor/musician/juggler releases additional films, I'll try to write about those as well. In the meantime, watching the eight movies listed above is a great way to pass the hours.
