The Caribbean - High Culture
When we say Caribbean there are few thing comes in our mind are WWW, It is not World Wide Web its Water, Wine and women. We think about Ooo La La La Le O - Kingfisher add when we say Caribbean. The term high culture refers to elitism and superiority. However, like many other phrases used in English that the term is used in several ways. Another aspect is that it is set to cultural products that define a culture, or even that is not popular will be held in high esteem.
The Caribbean, like all other regions in the world this was formerly under colonial rule of European and American masters. Different cultured people were brought to the Caribbean then joined in the culture of colonial in a more or less. After this, the use of high culture in the Caribbean. As a tourist area focuses on high culture has had a significant socio-economic development.
Carnival
The carnival is an institution, especially in the eastern Caribbean. The concept seems as popular culture, but it was really from the high culture - especially the tradition of French farce. It is important to note, are modern Caribbean Carnival contains elements of both popular and high art. We know that a number of people involved in the carnival. Designers in particular from the upper layers of the Caribbean society.
Carnival Caribbean origin mimics the traditional elite-day slavery. Carnival is the highest form. And it is also seen as representing the history of influence in the Caribbean. Carnival has shown, as Dimanche Gras, which is specifically designed to present the creative talents of costume designers are the artists themselves.
Music- Ooo La La La Le O
The music is the impact of high culture in the Caribbean. Type of music that I refer to is classical music. Caribbean region, especially in the colonial period, classical music in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, the Caribbean was held in high regard. Band is now a classic in the Caribbean. What is more important is that those who have been trained and high culture have inspired many to change the cultures of the Caribbean. Steel Pan is a versatile tool for the origin of Trinidad, which was in use by the particular group of people as rogue culture. Today, with the exception of the usual bands, now has different bands of steel. Steel orchestras have become a tool such as steel and the Pan-Riff Raff, so that means a sophisticated connoisseur of music.
Literature and art
Education, literature and art is less popular in the Caribbean, but they are held in high esteem. There is a distinct Caribbean identity in painting and literature. The production of art and crafts were popular in the region. A large part of their business is the recall of past events. Caribbean literature in English specifically to the former British Caribbean can be described as Anglo-Caribbean or historical contexts, Caribbean literature, but in modern contexts, the latter concept is rare.
Effect of high culture in the Caribbean generally inherited colonial period. The fact that the colonial power and cultural elites are both adopted and adapted to the Caribbean made the greatest impact. One is a fine line between high-Caribbean culture and mass culture, in some cases.

Caribbean Visionary $50 Caribbean Visionary: A. R. F. Webber and the Making of the Guyanese Nation traces the life of Albert Raymond Forbes Webber (1880-1932), a distinguished Caribbean scholar, statesman, legislator, and novelist. Using Webber as a lens, the book outlines the Guyanese struggle for justice and equality in an age of colonialism, imperialism, and indentureship. In this fascinating work, Selwyn R. Cudjoe examines Webber's emergence from the interior of Guyana to become a major presence in Caribbean politics. Caribbean Visionary examines Webber's insightful novel, Those That Be in Bondage , his travel writings, and his poetry. The book chronicles his formation of the West Indian Press Association, his work on British Guiana's constitution, and his championing of its people's causes. Cudjoe studies Webber's work with the British Guiana Labour Union to improve the conditions of the Guyanese working people and Webber's authorship of the Centenary History and Handbook of British Guiana. An important addition to Caribbean intellectual history, Caribbean Visionary is an indispensable work for scholars interested in the region's literature, political science, and economic thought. It is also an invaluable resource for those who wish to understand the genesis of contemporary Guyana and the English-speaking Caribbean. |

A Caribbean Identity $52 What is 'Caribbean Identity'? This amalgam of so many diverse elements and traditions springing from the complex history of the modern Caribbean is embodied in the person of A. S. Frankson.Frankson's long and distinguished public service career was decisively shaped by the impact of Western culture through European settlement in the region, the historical background of slavery and indentured labour, native nationalism and 'black consciousness'. He played a key role within the British colonial system in Belize prior to its independence in 1981 and subsequently he exemplified modern post-colonial international idealism by pursuing an active career in the US Peace Corps, both in Belize and his native Jamaica.Frankson explores the great and divisive issues of the Caribbean - slavery, colonialism, colour prejudice, colonial and post-colonial government, the growth of bureaucracy and even globalisation. In the manner of a modern Caribbean William Cobbett, conservative but radical and humane, he departs from much conventional post-colonial wisdom in pointing out the advantages of colonial government and even colonialism in its more benign forms, as displayed in the Caribbean. In the process he gives a rich picture of Caribbean life from childhood to old age and the emergence of a modern, post-colonial Caribbean world. This is a story for all readers interested in colonial and post-colonial history and the vital question of identity in colonial societies. |
