The Complete Illustrated Guide to the Kings & Queens of Britain. A Review
The Complete Illustrated Guide to the Kings & Queens of Britain: a Magnificent and Authoritative History of Royalty of Britain, the Rulers, Their Consorts and Families, and the Pretenders to the Throne / by Charles Phillips and John Haywood (Lorenz Books, 2006) Hardcover, 256 p. ISBN 9780754816287
The Complete Illustrated Guide to the Kings & Queens of Britain is even more comprehensive than the title suggests. After all, Great Britain did not exist before the formal merger of the thrones of England and Scotland. "Complete guide" means it goes back much further in the history of both countries.
There is a page or two devoted to most rulers, with somewhat more space devoted to some of the later ones. Queens and princes who, for various reasons never became king, also get their due. Changes of dynasties frequently entailed a succession war, and the champion of the losing side is known as a pretender.
To keep all of the details straight, the book includes such additional features as timelines and ancestral charts. It also offers a closer look at the Elizabethan and Victorian periods as a whole, the American Revolution, Princess Diana, and other special sections.
When I was in grade school, I developed a special fascination for the kings and queens of England, but I had to satisfy it with articles in the family encyclopedia. I wish something like this had been available at the time. Besides the fact that a chronological account is easier to follow, The Complete Illustrated Guide to the Kings & Queens of Britain is profusely illustrated in color.
Many children today can either develop or nourish an interest in history from this book. That doesn't make it a children's book, however. Adults will find a useful summary to refer to as they read more specialized histories. It also offers great help to fans of historical fiction. With so many popular novels about so many members of hundreds of years of English and Scottish royalty, the various charts can be very helpful in keeping track of the story's background.
Whether a coffee table picture book, a reference book, or something to read from cover to cover, The Complete Illustrated Guide to the Kings & Queens of Britain admirably serves a number of purposes. One such excellent book appears for sale daily on the All-Purpose Guru Alert. Stop by regularly to see what's featured.

Cordelia of Britain $93.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Queen Cordelia was a legendary Queen of the Britons, as recounted by Geoffrey of Monmouth. She was the youngest daughter of Leir and the second ruling queen of preRoman Britain. There is no independent historical evidence for her existence. Cordelia was Leirs favourite daughter, being the younger sister to Goneril and Regan. When Leir decided to divide his kingdom between his daughters and their husbands, Cordelia refused to flatter him. In response, Leir refused her any land in Britain or the blessing of any husband. Regardless, Aganippus, the King of the Franks, courted her and Leir granted the marriage but denied him any dowry. She moved to Gaul and lived there for many years. Leir was eventually exiled from Britain and fled to Cordelia in Gaul, seeking a restoration of his throne which had been seized by his other daughters husbands. She raised an army and invaded Britain, defeating the ruling dukes and restoring Leir. After Leirs death three years later, her husband Aganippus died and Cordelia returned to Britain and was crowned Queen. Believing in Britain $51 Why is there such intense interest today in the idea of 'Britishness'? Does it really matter, and what is 'Britishness' anyway? Why does the notion of 'being British' seem to have most resonance amongst recent immigrant - especially Asian and Afro-Caribbean - communities? And why is that 'traditional' British values now seem to be most widely practised and cherished by newcomers, not by the dominant majority? This book answers these vital questions by making a unique contribution to the current debate about British identity. It investigates why Liverpool is the most British of UK cities, with a regional accent representing a medley of Welsh, Scots, Irish and English; how a small village off the M6 motorway is arguably Britain's spiritual heart; and what theme parks, airport shops and eating habits have to tell us about the contemporary national character. It is often claimed that Great Britain is one of the most secular nations on earth. But - controversially - Ian Bradley argues that Britishness is best envisaged as a series of overlapping identities which are at root religious. He views the 400 year-old Union Jack, with its overlaid crosses of three of the nation's four patron saints, as symbolising the United Kingdom's unparalleled combination of unity in diversity, the diversity of a society which now embodies Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and many other - including secular - traditions. He goes on to argue that 'Britishness' has special value as a broad church measure of spiritual and cultural inclusiveness - and as a positive alternative to fundamentalism, narrow nationalism and jingoism. The author explores in separate chapters the distinctive contributions to Britishness made over the centuries by the Celtic traditions of the Welsh and Irish, the Anglo-Saxon strain of tolerance and freedom associated with the English, the moral seriousness of the Scots, and the characteristics of exuberance, modesty and privacy introduced by new black and Asian Britons. Published to coincide with the three hundredth anniversary of the 1707 Act of Union, his book offers a number of radical proposals. These include re-designing the Union flag to incorporate a black cross on a gold background, to better reflect the hybridity of contemporary Britain, and replacing George, Andrew and Patrick with a new trinity of patron saints - Columba, Bridget and Edward the Confessor. Ian Bradley contends that a rejuvenated BBC, monarchy and Commonwealth all have a part to play in forging a new sense of British identity which combines myth, imagination and tradition with a broad, open-minded inclusivity and respect for difference. Believing in Britain makes a consistently thoughtful and challenging contribution to one of the most important discussions of our time. |

Britain since the Seventies $28.95 In Britain since the Seventies, well-known historian Jeremy Black examines the most recent developments in British political, social, cultural and economic history. Taking the triumph of consumerism as an organizing theme, he charts the rise and fall of the Conservative Party, developments in British society, culture and politics, environmental issues, questions of identity, and changes in economic circumstance and direction. Iconic issues such as BSE, transport, asylum seekers and the NHS are viewed from both national and international perspectives. Black's account of contemporary Britain challenges as well as entertains, seeking to engage the reader in the process of interpretation. Through the lens of the last three decades, the author unveils his image of a country in which uncertainty, contingency and change are the defining features. In charting the impact of increasing individualism, longevity and secularization, Black is drawn repeatedly to examine a fundamental paradox of modern Britain: "At the start of both century and millennium, the British were more prosperous than ever before, but . . . happiness has not risen with prosperity." Britain since the Seventies is a wide-ranging and cogent evaluation of recent British history, and as such will appeal to all those interested in the condition of modern Britain, and how it came to be so, as well as being an ideal introduction for students of the subject. |

Geological History of Britain and Ireland $150 Britain and Ireland have a remarkably varied geology for so small a fragment of continental crust, with a fine rock record back through three billion years of geological time. This history would have been interesting enough if it had been played out on relatively stable continental crust. However, Britain and Ireland have developed at a tectonic crossroads, on crust once traversed by subduction zones and volcanic arcs, continental rifts and mountain belts. The resulting complexity is instructive, fascinating and perplexing. Geological History of Britain and Ireland tells the region's story at a level accessible to undergraduate geologists, as well as to postgraduates, professionals or informed amateurs. This second edition is fully revised and updated, reflecting our continually developing knowledge of the region's geology. Full coverage is again given to the rich Precambrian and Early Palaeozoic history, as well as to later events more relevant to hydrocarbon exploration. The book is an essential starting point for more detailed studies of the regional geology. |

YeleWest New Britain Languages $58.94 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The YeleWest New Britain languages are a tentative family proposed by Malcom Ross which unites three language isolates, Anem and Ata (Wasi) of New Britain, and Yeli Dnye (Yele) of Rossel Island. These were classified as East Papuan languages by Stephen Wurm, but this does not now seem tenable, and was abandoned in Ethnologue (2009). The evidence for the YeleWest New Britain family comes from the pronouns. Each language has two distinct sets of pronouns, and both sets correspond across the three languages. The forms illustrated here are the free pronouns and subject prefixes of Anem and Ata, and the free and possessive/prepositional pronouns of Yele. Anem and Ata make a distinction between inclusive and exclusive we. Yele also has dual pronouns which arent shown. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Atlas of Epidemic Britain (Hardcover) $672.65 Over a hundred years have passed since Charles Creighton`s A History of Epidemics in Britain was published. Then, epidemics of infectious diseases accounted for a third of all deaths in the British Isles, caused principally by familiar infections like measles, whooping cough, scarlet fever, and smallpox, as well as by a host of now unfamiliar conditions in Britain like plague, cholera and typhus. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, mortality from infectious diseases had dropped to less than one in ten thousand of all deaths. But an invidious change had been taking place. Many of the old infectious diseases had been pushed into retreat by improvements in health care, delivered for three generations by a National Health Service, socio-economic progress, and medical advances - particularly mass vaccination which caused morbidity and mortality from a series of vaccine-preventable infections to implode. The vacuum generated was filled not just by cancers and cardio-vascular conditions. To add to the mix, infectious disease morbidity and mortality began to increase again, caused by a complex mixture of apparently new pathogens like bird flu, swine flu, variant Creutzfeld-Jacob disease (vCJD), Escherichia coli O157:H7, HIV, and hospital-based infections. Using over 300 new maps, charts, photographs and associated text, this full-colour Atlas views a century of change - the ebb and flow of infection - in Britain`s epidemic landscape. It maps and interprets the complex time-space tapestry woven in twentieth century Britain by the uneven retreat of some infectious diseases, the emergence of new infections and the re-emergence of certain historical plagues. In each chapter, representative maps are accompanied by micrographs of the biological agents of the diseases mapped, illustrations of the environments in which they occur, the impacts they have had, and the pioneers who unravelled their complex life and death cycles. Britain for Sale (Paperback) $33.53 In 2010 American-owned Kraft, a corporation best known for making processed cheese, won an audacious bid battle for control of Cadbury, the iconic chocolate company founded by Quakers in the 19th century. On paper at least there was nothing especially unusual about this. Over the previous three decades, since Thatcher`s government had swept away capital controls ? making it easier for British companies to invest overseas and foreigners to invest in the UK ? great swathes of British industry had fallen into overseas hands. In the wake of the global financial crisis, a new wave of takeovers began, starting with Cadbury. None of these deals were scrutinised by the authorities. Why then was British business so popular? What factors have made the UK the first port of call for the raiders from across the globe? And what long term impact has the invasion had on the British economy?Britain for Sale explores the economic, financial and political factors behind the great British sell-off. It examines why the politicians and regulators were so reluctant to become involved and why it took the takeover of a chocolate company to temporarily arouse the excitement of Parliament, the Office of Fair Trading, the Takeover Panel and other regulators. Most importantly it looks at the consequences for the British economy, jobs and the consumer, and shows how the takeover free-for-all has been a disaster for Britain. |

Eurasian EagleOwl in Great Britain $74.88 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Eurasian Eagleowl was not considered to be naturally resident in Britain, but according to a BBC TV programme (2005), a pair bred for several years in a valley in Ministry of Defence land in North Yorkshire. There was some debate as to whether these birds were escapees or whether they have arrived naturally from the continent, which would only be a short journey from either France, the Low Countries or Scandinavia. At the time the program was made, they had reared 20 young to independence, and three young were in the nest. Nothing was known of what happened to those 20 young, except that one of them electrocuted itself on power lines in Shropshire. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F.
