The border was created in 1921 by virtue of the Government of Ireland Act 1920. Although it was originally intended as an internal frontier within the UK and Ireland the Border became an international frontier in December 1922 when the Parliament of Northern Ireland exercised its right to opt out of the Irish Free State.
I grew up in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland and my Granny lived about 10 miles the other side of the border near Clones, Co. Monaghan. I remember the old Customs post at Clones. My mother recalls smuggling butter over the border in the 1950s and people used to bring in TVs and electrical goods up until the 1980s. The Customs hut became defunct with the introduction of the European Single Market on 31 December 1992.
The Troubles meant that the British Army patrolled the border at certain points along the 360km border. When we went to visit Granny we used to get stopped by the British Army at Newtownbutler. It was a pretty scary experience to wait in a queue of traffic at a checkpoint in darkness the middle of nowhere until the driver saw a red light beckoning him to stop and produce his licence. The soldiers had guns and I did see cars pulled over at the side of the road for questioning. It was a surreal experience.
When we went to the beach at Rossnowlagh we had to go through a border checkpoint at Belleek. On a fine day most of Enniskillen would be waiting to be let through. Around the Twelfth of July a lot of Catholics left the North for the Republic.
Many smaller roads were blown up in order to make them impassable to regular traffic. Farmers in some parts had to make considerable detours to check on stock or visit different parts of their land. Some families got stopped a lot as they went about their business.
I remember the Border as a contentious issue. The landscape in South Armagh was dominated by British Army Surveillance posts, there was even one at the GAA pitch in Crossmaglen. To be stopped at the border was a hassle that we could have done without.
On the other hand someone had to be in charge of law and order and monitor people's movements at a time when everyone in Northern Ireland lived with the threat of bombs, injury and attacks by dissident forces. The British Army had a role to play in checking who was coming in and out and what they were doing. There was however suspicion about who they might pass the information to.
Personally I didn't have to worry about the deeper motives and/or activities of the British Army but I still viewed them as an Occupying Force. Nowadays when I drive across the Border I am glad to have a straight run through.
