Great Britain's Crown Jewels
The British Crown Jewels are one of the most popular pieces of jewelry in all the world. This includes all te regalia and vestments worn by the Kings and Queens of the UK during the coronation ceremony and other important events. This article is about the famous pieces making up the British Crown Jewels. Hope you enjoy it!
Crowns
There are a number of crowns included in the British Crown Jewels. St. Edwards Crown is the first. This crown was made in 1661 and includes 444 precious stones. It's made of gold and is extremely heavy according to some British monarchs.
The Imperial State Crown is another one. It was made for King George VI in 1937. It too is made of gold. The crown includes 5 rubies, 11 emeralds, 17 sapphires, 273 pearls, and 2,868 diamonds! The Cullinan II is one of the diamonds included in the Imperial State Crown, which is also called the Lesser Star of Africa.
The Imperial Crown of India is stored with Great Britain's Crown Jewels, however it's not considered one of them. The Crown Jewels were to never enter another country, and therefore this crown was created for King George V as he visited Delhi.
Wives of Kings more than likely wore the Crown of Mary of Modena. It seemed like with each new Queen consort, a new crown was made for them to wear. In each crown, the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond was placed.
Orbs & Sceptres
The Sceptre with the Cross is held by the monarch in his right hand during the coronation. It includes the famous Cullinan I Diamond, which is called the Great Star of Africa.
The Sceptre with the Dove has a dove atop it which symbolizes the Holy Spirit. It was created in 1661, the same year that the Sceptre with the Cross was made. This Sceptre is held in the left hand while the right hand hold onto the Sceptre with the Cross. At this moment, the monarch is crowned with St. Edward's Crown.
The Sovereign's Orb was created in 1661 also and is made of gold. On top of the Sovereign's Orb is a cross which represents the monarch's role as Defender of the Faith.
Other Crown Jewels
During the coronation, five swords are used. The Jewelled Sword of Offering, the Sword of State, the Sword of Spiritual Justice, the Sword of Temporal Justice, and the Sword of Mercy are all five swords.
The Crown Jewels have been kept in the Tower of London since 1303! Armed guards defend them.

The Crown $11.99 An aristocratic young nun must find a legendary crown in order to save her father—and preserve the Catholic faith from Cromwell’s ruthless terror. The year is 1537. . . Joanna Stafford, a Dominican nun, learns that her favorite cousin has been condemned by Henry VIII to be burned at the stake. Defying the sacred rule of enclosure, Joanna leaves the priory to stand at her cousin’s side. Arrested for interfering with the king’s justice, Joanna, along with her father, is sent to the Tower of London. The ruthless Stephen Gardiner, Bishop of Winchester, takes terrifying steps to force Joanna to agree to spy for him: to save her father’s life she must find an ancient relic—a crown so powerful, it may hold the ability to end the Reformation. Accompanied by two monks, Joanna returns home to Dartford Priory and searches in secret for this long-lost piece of history worn by the Saxon King Athelstan in 937 during the historic battle that first united Britain. But Dartford Priory has become a dangerous place, and when more than one dead body is uncovered, Joanna departs with a sensitive young monk, Brother Edmund, to search elsewhere for the legendary crown. From royal castles with tapestry-filled rooms to Stonehenge to Malmesbury Abbey, the final resting place of King Athelstan, Joanna and Brother Edmund must hurry to find the crown if they want to keep Joanna’s father alive. At Malmesbury, secrets of the crown are revealed that bring to light the fates of the Black Prince, Richard the Lionhearted, and Katherine of Aragon’s first husband, Arthur. The crown’s intensity and strength are beyond the earthly realm and it must not fall into the wrong hands. With Cromwell’s troops threatening to shutter her priory, bright and bold Joanna must now decide who she can trust with the secret of the crown so that she may save herself, her family, and her sacred way of life. This provocative story melds heart-stopping suspense with historical detail and brings to life the poignant dramas of women and men at a fascinating and critical moment in England’s past. |

Germans in Britain Since 1500 $140 German-speaking people have always lived, either as temporary or as long-term residents, in the British Isles. While the majority of the visitors arrived to pursue trade, others came for a wide variety of reasons. In the sixteenth century German reformers came to promote Protestantism. In 1714 the Elector of Hanover came because he had inherited the crown. In Victorian times Karl Marx wrote Das Kapital in the British Museum. The nineteenth century was perhaps the highpoint in the history of German settlement, with the establishment of widespread German communities and organisations. The First World War, and a combinations of official and unofficial hostility, destroyed most of these communities. During the interwar years both Nazis and Jewish refugees from Nazism entered the country. Since the war, professionals have formed the basis of the German community. The present volume traces the history of German settlement through a series of essays designed to cover each period and to analyse specific aspects. Germans in Britain Since 1500 represents a unique history of an immigrant grouping in Britain over almost 500 years. |

A Brief History of Britain 1485-1660 $13.11 From the death of Richard III on Bosworth Field in 1485 to the execution of Charles I, after the Civil Wars of 1642-48, England was transformed by two Dynasties. Firstly the Tudors, who won the crown on the battlefield and changed both the nature of kingship but also the nation itself. England became a Protestant nation and began to establishment itself as a trading power; facing down impossible odds it defeated its enemies on land and sea. Yet after a century Elizabeth I died with no heir and the crown was passed to the Stuarts, who were keen to remould the kingdom in their own image. Leading Historian, Ronald Hutton brilliantly recreates the political landscape over this early modern period and shows how the modern nation was forged in these anxious, transformative years. Combining skilful pen portraits of the leading figures, culture, economics and accounts of everyday life, he reveals insights in this key era in our nation's story. This the second book in the four volume Brief History of Britain which brings together some of the leading historians to tell our nation's story from the Norman Conquest of 1066 to the present-day. Combining the latest research with accessible and entertaining story telling, it is the ideal introduction for students and general readers. |
