Masons played a big role in the Civil War. The common notion is that the Confederation flag bore a deep connection to Masonry. However, famous archivists like Higgins Botham said that the relation between a confederation flag and the Masonry is just coincidental.
During the Civil War, there were several people who were a part of the Freemasonry, a fraternal organization and they were administered through lodges. Masonic people had several symbols related to the fraternity. So it was quite common to find them in the States. It was believed that General Sherman spared people who had Masonic ring.
During the Civil War, Masons fought on both the sides of the War and they helped several victories come through. There were several southern plantation owners who used to display the Masonic ring and aprons. At Vicksburg, when the battle was over and Vicksburg was defeated, Masons from both the sides of the war got together to hold a meeting and helped bury the generals. Also, at the battle in Gettysburg when one of the fellow Masons was killed, the other Masons from both sides gave him a burial.
However, it was difficult to understand because there was proof that Masons who belonged to a common fraternity worldwide believed in common principles. Nonetheless, when it came to the Civil War, Masons fought on either sides and that is why perhaps a Mason ring commanded respect and usually people did not harm them.
There have been several stories of Masonic participation in the War and many people have also proved their participation.
