From PowerPoint presentations to graphs, charts, and other visual aids, everybody is looking for a fast way to make comparisons in life.
Why should it be any different at the race track where quick decisions in the heat of battle have serious financial consequences? It is real money you're betting and you are trying to make money and show a profit on the horse races with your decisions.
When you are in the pressure cooker and have to make that quick decision, wouldn't it be nice to have a quick and easy and clearly spelled out way to make the comparisons and decide if you are looking at a good bet?
The problem is that the factors in handicapping are weighted. Some are more important than others and you must decide how much of a factor each one plays. First of all, let me say this, if you aren't using a good system to compare the horses and consistently looking at the same factors, then you don't have a prayer of winning money at the race track. It is that simple.
Ask yourself this? Is there anything else you can do in life without having a d good system or method that will be consistently successful? Of course not. One of the secrets to happiness in life is learning that there is a right way to do things and when you find something that works, stick with it. If you could go to the race track day after day and win money doing the same thing, would you do it?
There are a few people who are thinking to themselves, that sounds boring. Well which is more boring, winning consistently or losing consistently? Obviously, winning consistently is a lot more fun than losing.
So you must have a system that you use to compare the runners in a race. The next thing is that you must be able to compare those runners of the odds on the tote board and make some pretty fast and accurate decisions based on their chances of winning as compared to the expected payouts. That is where the "Ladder" a new visual aid, comes in handy.
After you have used whatever system you use to compare the runners, draw a ladder. I like to use graph paper, a fresh sheet for each race so I have plenty of room for notes that I will look at after the race or at the end of the day. Next, draw a regular ladder on the sheet of paper and give it lots of rungs. Now take your absolute worse horse and put it at the bottom of the ladder. Next, take the second worse and put it up the ladder. It doesn't have to be on the very next rung. Look at the handicapping factors from your system and then decide how much better that horse is than the one below it. Do this for each horse until you have all the runners on their proper places on the ladder. I always work in pencil so I can erase and make changes as there are scratches and I spot different things, like a horse that is overheated or looks real dull in the post parade, etc.
Now give yourself enough time to look at the odds and your ladder and decide which horse(s) based on its place on the ladder and the rungs between it and the others, is really a good bet. I guarantee this simple visual aid will amaze you and your handicapping will move up to a much higher level, not to mention that fact that you will improve the more you use the ladder. All it requires is a consistent system and practice.
For a comparison of winning systems that can be used with the ladder approach and that come with a full money back guarantee go to Proven Handicapping Systems
The most consistent horse racing systems have to have the basics and a handicapper must understand the basics. I have been around horse racing for 50 years including as an owner. Without the basics the rest is not going to do any good. If you want to learn how a horse owner and insider handicaps just go to The truth about handicapping and get the truth.
Bill Peterson is a former horse race owner and professional handicapper. He comes from a horse race handicapping family and as he puts it, "Horse Racing is in my blood."

The GI Bill $22 On rare occasions in American history, Congress enacts a measure so astute, so far-reaching, so revolutionary, it enters the language as a metaphor. The Marshall Plan comes to mind, as does the Civil Rights Act. But perhaps none resonates in the American imagination like the G.I. Bill. In a brilliant addition to Oxford's acclaimed Pivotal Moments in American History series, historians Glenn C. Altschuler and Stuart M. Blumin offer a compelling and often surprising account of the G.I. Bill and its sweeping and decisive impact on American life. Formally known as the Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944, it was far from an obvious, straightforward piece of legislation, but resulted from tense political maneuvering and complex negotiations. As Altschuler and Blumin show, an unlikely coalition emerged to shape and pass the bill, bringing together both New Deal Democrats and conservatives who had vehemently opposed Roosevelt's social-welfare agenda. For the first time in American history returning soldiers were not only supported, but enabled to pursue success--a revolution in America's policy towards its veterans. Once enacted, the G.I. Bill had far-reaching consequences. By providing job training, unemployment compensation, housing loans, and tuition assistance, it allowed millions of Americans to fulfill long-held dreams of social mobility, reshaping the national landscape. The huge influx of veterans and federal money transformed the modern university and the surge in single home ownership vastly expanded America's suburbs. Perhaps most important, as Peter Drucker noted, the G.I. Bill "signaled the shift to the knowledge society." The authors highlight unusual or unexpected features of the law--its color blindness, the frankly sexist thinking behind it, and its consequent influence on race and gender relations. Not least important, Altschuler and Blumin illuminate its role in individual lives whose stories they weave into this thoughtful account. Written with insight and narrative verve by two leading historians, The G.I. Bill makes a major contribution to the scholarship of postwar America. |

Money & Power $24.95 The dramatic story of greed, money, power, and the moguls and dynasties that have shaped business From merchant ships to microchips, industry has been defined by the powerful business leaders who have caused seismic shifts in the growth of commerce. The companion book to the acclaimed CNBC documentary, Money and Power takes readers on a gripping journey following the movement of power from east to west-from the feudal estates of medieval Europe to the halls of modern finance, from the teeming streets of ancient Venice to the serene campuses of Silicon Valley-to tell the story of how business shaped the modern world, and how the goals of a few ambitious people paved the way to the wealth and prosperity shared by so much of the world's population today. A dramatic narrative focusing on the groundbreakers throughout history-from St. Godric, the twelfth-century monk reviled for his love of money to Bill Gates, the contemporary embodiment of money and power-traces the roots of banking, industry, commerce, and power. Fever-pitch moments in the book center around pivotal figures such as Cosimo de Medici, Philip II, the Rothschilds, J. P. Morgan, the Rockefellers, Henry Ford and others. The authors also extract important lessons about the strategies and tactics used to build these business empires. |
