Much has been said, written, and speculated about what is really going to happen in 2012. This year, more precisely, date of December 21, 2012 has been said are very important in the Mayan calendar. This is the date that has caused much talk and fear that it will the last day of earthly existence. He is said to be a prophecy, because the Mayan calendar ends on that date. The fact that the Mayan calendar ends on such a arbitrary date prompt many to believe that predictions foresaw the end of the Mayan world to come, long before anyone else.
Account Mayan Long Calendar is a calendar rather special, and it is easy to see why the Mayan predictions are credible on how the timetable is structured. He starts August 11, 3114 BC, marked the creation of the world by the Mayans. The creation date is written in the Mayan representation 0.0.0.0.0. The first digit represents the baktun *, and each takes exactly 144,000 days baktun, solar or 394.3 years. All figures, except the second from the right rolls to 0 on the 20th version, the other figures in rolls 0 after iteration 18. The baktun 13, which we are currently in began Sept. 18, 1618.
Calendar turns to the 14th baktun December 21, 2012, a cycle that lasted 5125 years since the beginning. According to the Maya, this is called the Great Cycle. Maybe the Mayan predictions highlighted something even bigger, called precession of the equinoxes. The earth axis of rotation moves very slowly, making a complete rotation every 26,000 years. This is given as a plausible reason to explain why the Mayans ended their calendar on that date in 2012, because this not only for that date the winter solstice, but the Earth will complete its precession that day too.
The Mayans were technologically advanced for their time. They were extremely proficient in mathematics, which would make such a parameter date seems plausible, although it seems rather arbitrary to the uninitiated. But should we worry about December 21, 2012? mass destruction and Polar changes occur, much like what we saw in the movies? Chances are we'll probably wake up that day and it will be like any other day, and well as the fervor around Y2K, it could be for nothing. As we approach this day supposedly fatal, the Mayan prophecies are in the back of everyone's mind.

There you can find articles, books and videos to educate you on how the infamous 2012 might play out. It might possibly be all hype but I wouldn't bet against "something" happening. We certainly hope whatever it is isn't catastrophic in nature but more along the lines of a new awakening for our planet.
*A baktun (properly b'ak'tun) is 20 katun cycles of the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar
