The name is derived since it is a sandspit (a landform that is both connected to the land while its end exists in the open water). Compared to the Surfers Paradise, The Spit has a more pristine coastline, since it isn't a developed as the more popular Queensland suburb. Still, it has a number of notable destinations such as the Sea World and great accommodations such as the Sheraton Mirage Resort. Federation Walk (a pedestrian walkway more than three kilometers long) also allows visitors to explore The Spit up close. The Oceanway, a foreshoreway that is more than 30 kilometers linf, also allows the same advantage for tourists.

The Main Beach is also an area not as developed as Surfers Paradise, so visitors can enjoy a more spacious and more relaxed atmosphere. Its name was derived because it was the main surfing beach before. Many recreational parks and resorts do exist in the suburb, so it remains to be a good destination within the city, a less busy alternative to the more popular Gold Coast attractions.
