1988 is the year when the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf was first minted. The composition of the coin includes one troy ounce of 0.9999 silver and surprisingly, the value of these coins is five Canadian Dollars, although it is not uncommon for the coins to trade at a much higher price due to collector demand. Mintage has varied widely since that initial issue from over 1,000,000 to just 100,000 in 1997, simply contingent on orders. Back in 2008 the mint stated publicly that over half of the silver maples were sent to Germany, which speaks to the coins success as an investment vehicle for silver bullion, both inside and outside of Canada.
The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf come in a variety of special issues, and included to the list are the following: a colored maple, holograms, and special editions for the events of the winter Olympics, both past and the 2010 events. Displayed on the obverse of the Silver Maples is the picture of Queen Elizabeth II, of which the mint has actually designed three versions. The first image is of the Queen when she is at age 39, the next at age 64; and the last at 79 years. On the reverse side, there is a picture of the maple leaf, but because of the coin's different variations, color enhancements and a privy mark that makes even this common symbol of Canada very distinct.
The privy mark has also been varied in a number ways to commemorate special events. Back in 1998 they put out a special version to mark the 90th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mint. There has also been such contrasting subjects as a tiger, a rabbit, and even the Titanic. The 20th year Anniversary of the Maple Leaf program (they started in gold) was marked in the year 1999. One of the best known numismatic celebrations of the new millennium was completed with a privy mark of fireworks and of course the year 2000.
The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins said that in comparison to their Platinum and Gold counterparts, Silver Maple Leafs were not that popular to most collectors, partly because of the fact that during the year 1996 and 1997, their prices soared. The drastic increase in prices was practically precipitated by the limitation in the circulation of the coins, because most of it was left to be stored in Europe. During the year 1998, the Royal Mint released a coin with 10 ounces of 0.9999 fine silver to commemorate its tenth anniversary.
So you'll notice I haven't gone into any detail on the Silver Krugerrand. There's a reason for that. The South African Mint has never released them. I know, you're thinking that you've seen them for sale, perhaps handled them yourself. They certainly exist- however they are privately produced and not an official coin. Sound dubious? It does to collectors, and the 2010 Standard Catalog of World Coins doesn't list them. They may contain the appropriate amount of silver bullion, however you purchase Silver Krugerrands at your own risk.
Even though silver always ends up second to gold, the Canadian Silver Maple Leafs surely have some extraordinary characteristics that can match up to the characteristics of the Gold Maple Leafs.
Ben is a small investor in gold and silver bullion coins. He shares his research and insight at Selling Krugerrand and has a thing or two to say about Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins.

The Anniversary Compulsion $18.99 Whether it is birthdays, wedding anniversaries, Thanksgiving dinners or New Year's celebrations, we humans demonstrate a peculiar compulsion to celebrate the continuing cycle of the recurrent calendar dates that mark our lives. Public events of the same type evoke an even more pronounced response. The Anniversary Compulsion focuses on Canada's Centennial celebrations in 1967 as an example of how a classic mega-anniversary can be successfully organized and staged. With wit and wisdom, Peter Aykroyd describes how many of the key elements of Centennial year will undoubtedly be present in the staging of what is bound to be an unprecedented worldwide celebratory outburst - the advent of the 21st century, the Third Millennium. |
