High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Said alAndalusi (1029 1070), was an Andalusi qadi, scientist and historian. He was born at Almeria and died at Toledo. He was a student of Maslamah Ibn Ahmad alMajriti of Andalusia. The Toledo jurist Said AlAndalusi (d.1034) reasoned that the pagan Norsemen were affected by their wintry origins: Because the sun does not shed its rays directly over their heads, their climate is cold and the atmosphere cloudy. Consequently their temperaments have become cold and their humors rude, while their bodies have grown large, their complexions light and their hair long. Feminist Traditions in Andalusi-Moroccan Oral Narratives

Feminist Traditions in Andalusi-Moroccan Oral Narratives

$80

This book introduces seven Andalusi-Moroccan women's tales, analyzes them from literary theoretical perspectives, and reveals them to be vitally feminist. These tales were collected in Tetouan in northern Morocco and few have ever been translated into English. The protagonists, typically Muslim women, come across as being particularly eloquent and capable of outwitting the men in their lives, who tend to be princes and Sultans. Lebbady delves into the structural and thematic features of the tales and draws parallels to the European courtly love tradition.

Trade and Traders in Muslim Spain: The Commercial Realignment of the Iberian Peninsula, 900 1500

Trade and Traders in Muslim Spain: The Commercial Realignment of the Iberian Peninsula, 900 1500

$46.49

This volume surveys Iberian international trade from the tenth to the fifteenth century, with particular emphasis on commerce in the Muslim period and on changes brought by Christian conquest of much of Muslim Spain in the thirteenth century. From the tenth to the thirteenth century, markets in the Iberian peninsula were closely linked to markets elsewhere in the Islamic world, and a strong east-west Mediterranean trading network linked Cairo with Cordoba. Following routes along the North African coast, Muslim and Jewish merchants carried eastern goods to Muslim Spain, returning eastwards with Andalusi exports. Situated at the edge of the Islamic west, Andalusi markets were also emporia for the transfer of commodities between the Islamic world and Christian Europe. After the thirteenth century the Iberian peninsula became part of the European economic sphere, its commercial realignment aided by the opening of the Straits of Gibraltar to Christian trade, and by the contemporary demise of the Muslim trading network in the Mediterranean.

Power in the Portrayal

Power in the Portrayal

$22.95

Power in the Portrayal unveils a fresh and vital perspective on power relations in eleventh- and twelfth-century Muslim Spain as reflected in historical and literary texts of the period. Employing the methods of the new historical literary study in looking at a range of texts, Ross Brann reveals the paradoxical relations between the Andalusi Muslim and Jewish elites in an era when long periods of tolerance and respect were punctuated by outbreaks of tension and hostility. The examined Arabic texts reveal a fragmented perception of the Jew in eleventh-century al-Andalus. They depict seemingly contradictory figures at whose poles are an intelligent, skilled, and noble Jew deserving of homage and a vile, stupid, and fiendish enemy of God and Islam. For their part, the Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic texts display a deep-seated reluctance to portray Muslims in any light at all. Brann cogently demonstrates that these representations of Jews and Muslims--each of which is concerned with issues of sovereignty and the exercise of power--reflect the shifting, fluctuating, and ambivalent relations between elite members of two of the ethno-religious communities of al-Andalus. Brann's accessible prose is enriched by his splendid translations; the original texts are also included. This book is the first to study the construction of social meaning in Andalusi Arabic, Judeo-Arabic, and Hebrew literary texts and historical chronicles. The novel approach illuminates nuances of respect, disinterest, contempt, and hatred reflected in the relationship between Muslims and Jews in medieval Spain.

Moorish Poetry: A Translation of the Pennants an Anthology Compiled in 1243 by the Andalusian Ibn Sa'id

$27.85

First published by Cambridge in 1953, this book is an English translation of The Pennants, an anthology of Arabic poetry compiled in 1243 by Ibn Sa'id al Andalusi, a native of Alcala la Real in then Moorish southern Spain. The text is arranged geographically and falls into two main divisions, the first part being concerned with poets born in Arabic Spain, and the second dealing with those who were natives of North Africa (from Morocco to Tunisia) and Sicily. The separate geographical sections are further subdivided according to the poets' social status or profession. Featured in this highly personal vision are some of the most famous writers in Arabic literature, together with some more obscure ones. This is a fascinating volume that will be of value to anyone with an interest in the cultural life of the Arab world.

Science in the Medieval World

Science in the Medieval World

$26.08

During the Middle Ages, a thriving center for learning and research was Muslim Spain, where students gathered to consult Arabic manuscripts of earlier scientific works and study with famous teachers. One of these teachers was Sa'id al-Andalusi, who in 1068 wrote Kitab Tabaqat al-'Umam, or "Book of the Categories of Nations," which recorded the contributions to science of all known nations. Today, it is one of few surviving medieval Spanish Muslim texts, and this is its first English translation. Science ('ulum), as used by Sa'id and other scholars of that period, is a broad term covering virtually all aspects of human knowledge. After initial discussions of the categories of nations that did or did not cultivate science, Sa'id details the specific contribution of nine nations or peoples-India, Persia, Chaldea, Greece, Rome, Egypt, the Arab Orient, al-Andalus, and the Hebrews. He includes the names of many individual scientists and scholars and describes their various contributions to knowledge, making his book a significant work of reference as well as history.
