Where all the wedding traditions come from? Generally, they go back several years ago to people beliefs about a multitude of superstitions and practices. For example in ancient Rome White was thought to be a symbol of joy. In later times, the meaning was changed to purity. In the dark ages curses and evil spirits were very real for people and families and friends of the bride and groom to dress like the couple in order to confuse evil spirits that may harm them say. In those days before the events were logically explained people felt about what happened as an omen that bad things were coming. Brides would herbs to chase away evil spirits and the day of her wedding dress would bring her with them. Later, flowers were considered to have the same effect and that eventually became the bridal bouquet.
Honeymoon. Where does this word mean? In former times men did not court the woman or the date of their choice. The most likely to get a wife was to just catch it and take it. Given the courage of a soda drink made from honey, the groom was allowed to keep his wife if she has not escaped a "moon" or month. He would drink honey in the hope that it remain peaceful and not try to escape. The two words eventually combined to honeymoon.
The veil was just an article of clothing Women in Ancient Greece and Rome were required to wear. They were regarded as chattels and were covered from head to toe. Only the husband was allowed to see her discovery. This has been a symbol of male domination and has survived until today as the shape of the bridal veil. Like today, it is considered bad luck for the groom seeing the bride before the wedding. The Bridal Veil worn until the vows are exchanged. But many brides today are changing the tradition and wear rings of flowers in their hair or short veil worn over the hair back instead of on the face.
Grains that have long been symbols of fertility are the source of reasoning which began the wedding cake. In ancient Rome after the wedding ceremony thin loaves of bread were broken over the head of the bride. They believed that the addition of bread crumbs that have been broken over his head, the more children the couple would have. Over the years loaves of bread has become bigger, while most of the wedding could help and eventually crumble cake were used. Thus the beginning of the cake wedding.
In Britain many years ago there was a tradition to throw down. After marriage, the couple retired to their bridal chamber in which the point would be invited to enter and retrieve one of the bottom of the bride and standing in the bed to throw at the head of the bride. They thought nearest to hit the nose bride would be the next to marry. Thank you God, things have changed in the bouquet toss.
