This would keep some coins, such as the South African Krugerrand, from being able to be used in that role.

Coins provide downside protection and offer a strong diversification to any portfolio. In addition, gold is always in demand, so no matter what happens to your local currency, 50 dollar gold coin or a JM bar of gold bullion will always be able to be used to pay for the necessities, making ether gold coin or gold JM bar better investment.
