When Alaska first became a state in 1959, it declared its dedication to sustainable fishing practices in its constitution, which mandates that "fish... be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle." As such, Alaskan fisheries have been managed with a view toward long-term sustainability for more than five decades.
Alaska's fisheries are managed in such a way that protects them against overfishing, pollution and habitat damage. Alaska's sustainable salmon management practices are particularly effective. According to the "Report on the Status of the U.S. Fisheries," an annual study from the National Marine Fisheries Service, none of Alaska's salmon stocks are classified as overfished, nor are any of them even approaching overfished status.
Alaska's salmon industry is managed by the state through three separate organizations. Conservation and management is under the jurisdiction of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, while policy and allocation is under the Alaska Board of Fisheries. Regulations are enforced by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers.
Alaska's sustainable salmon management practices have a long history. Commercial salmon fishing has occurred in Alaska's oceans for more than 100 years, and the industry has been heavily regulated by the state since Alaska achieved statehood in 1959. In the 1970s, the state began limiting licenses for fisheries and enacted a number of other initiatives. One of these initiatives was the establishment of Alaska's first salmon hatcheries, which help to sustain the ocean's salmon population by controlling population change.
In addition to sustainable salmon management practices, the Alaskan government also uses a number of fishery management methods and techniques to regulate the larger fishing industry. These include: stock assessment, quota establishment, bycatch reduction and a firm Total Allowable Catch, which is a fixed limit on the amount of fish that can be captured. The government also places a strong emphasis on protection, conservation and restoration on populations by administering the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Fur Seal Act and the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation Act.
Alaska's sustainable fishing practices have resulted in consistently large harvests for more than five decades. Therefore, it is fitting that fisheries worldwide look to Alaska as a model for sustainability.
It's up to us to protect the planet. Check out the sustainability tips from the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute. Alaska's fishermen have a long tradition of effective resource management to ensure that generations to come can enjoy fresh seafood.

49 at Last: The Fight for Alaska Statehood $3.95 How a prophesy was fulfilled Secretary of State William Seward, who negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Czarist Russia in 1867, predicted on his first visit to the northern possession that Alaska one day would become "a state or many states." Seward's prediction came true in 1959 when Alaska became the 49th and largest state. Little wonder this took ninety years. At first, Alaska was recognized as a military district and later as a territory with limited self-government. The movement toward statehood was frustratingly slow for its advocates given the powerful influence of outside mining, shipping, and commercial fishing interests who exploited Alaska; the differences of opinion both at home and in Washington, D.C. as to whether the territory could support itself as a state; and the swirl of complex political intrigue that touched on other issues such as civil rights, the balance of power between the Democrats and Republicans, and the timing of Hawaii's admittance as a state. In a book that reads at times like a political thriller, author Dr. Claus-M. Naske tells the story about how, after decades of trial and error, the unrelenting pro-statehood forces won support from President Dwight D. Eisenhower-a breakthrough for their cause-and forged a coalition in Congress that |

Fighting for the Forty-Ninth Star: C.W. Snedden and the Crusade for Alaska Statehood $22.79 In the 1950s C. W. Snedden, owner of the "Fairbanks Daily News-Miner," used his newspaper to crusade for statehood and the development of Alaska and its resources, particularly North Slope oil and gas. As a confidant of Interior Secretary Fred A. Seaton, Snedden had unrivaled access to the top ranks of the Eisenhower Administration and he employed his connections to advance the cause of Alaska statehood. Snedden orchestrated a national press campaign to push through the statehood legislation and opened much of the North Slope for oil development, which would play such a crucial role in financing the young state. "Fighting for the Forty-Ninth" is the story of how an independent newspaper publisher played a pivotal role in the making of modern Alaska. |

Changes in Statehood $124 This study of international relations is often cut off from the study of domestic affairs, but this insulation of the international from the domestic is wrong. International forces profoundly influence the core structures of sovereign statehood, including their political military, economic and normative substance. Conversely, the very nature of international relations is determined by the internal structure of states. In an important contribution to the debate, Georg Srensen puts forward an original analysis of this critical interplay between internal and external forces. He explores the development and change of the sovereign state and offers a new agenda for the study of international relations. Changes in Statehood will be essential reading for students and researchers in international relations, political science and security. |

Northern Landscapes: The Struggle for Wilderness Alaska $9.29 Alaska in the early l950s was one of the world's last great, undeveloped areas. Yet sweeping changes were underway. In l958, Congress awarded the new state over l00 million acres to promote economic development. In l971, it gave Native groups more than 40 million acres to settle land claims and facilitate the building of an 800-mile oil pipeline. Spurred by the newly militant environmental movement, it also began to consider the preservation of Alaska's magnificent scenery and wildlife. Northern Landscapes is the first comprehensive examination of the campaign to preserve wild Alaska through the creation of a vast system of parks and wildlife refuges. Drawing on archival sources and interviews, Daniel Nelson traces disputes over resources alongside the politics of the Alaska statehood movement. He provides in-depth coverage of the growth of Alaskan environmental organizations, their partnerships with national groups, and their participation in political campaigns into the l970s. Engagingly written, Northern Landscapes focuses on the activism that led to the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) of l980, which set aside more than l00 million acres, doubling the size of the national park and wildlife refuge systems, and tripling the size of the wilderness preservation system. Arguably the single greatest triumph of environmentalism, ANILCA also set the stage for continuing battles over the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Alaska's national forests. |
