While various seafood species may seem to magically appear in seafood markets and grocery stores around the planet, the truth is that hard work harvesting and careful observation to ensure sustainability goes into maintaining fresh, delicious, wild seafood on store shelves. There is no better example of top planning and research ensuring fresh wild seafood than that of Alaska. As written into the Alaska state constitution, the state has since 1959, mandated that fisheries in Alaska adhere to the state's sustainability practices under strict watch of the appropriate authorities. As such, the life cycles of many seafood species like Alaska salmon, and Alaska Spot Prawns must be carefully analyzed and studied.
Part of maintaining sustainable populations in Alaska is putting various acceptable harvesting seasons in place. For example, Alaska Spot Prawns always breed just after female molting which happens in the autumn. This is a time when harvesting is not allowed in the Alaskan waters, for fear of disrupting the mating cycle. During the winter, the eggs are kept safe by being carried around by female prawns until they hatch. After hatching, the larvae pass through several life stages, then in by late summer have developed into full juvenile shrimp. If a shrimp is too small, or seen to be juvenile, it must be thrown back as it can take several years to reach sexual maturity. Respecting this life cycle has been absolutely necessary to maintaining strong populations in Alaskan waters.
Not only do Alaska Spot Prawns follow similar mating patterns during the year, but similar feeding patterns during the day. At certain times of day and night they can always be found in either deeper or shallower waters, depending on the feeding schedule. While fisheries could exploit this predictability, Alaska keeps the prawns protected by controlling the amount of fishing and harvesting allowed to happen during the day. Each year, about 90% of the shrimp harvested with pots and traps in Alaska are Alaska Spot Prawns. The harvests each year are measured in tons, and must all be fresh frozen live on board the fishing vessels. Is all this effort worth it for the result? Just ask any fanatic of fresh, wild, Alaska shrimp and the answer will certainly be 'yes!'
