John Adams Miniseries DVD
John Adams never failed to answer the call of his country to serve. He understood what it meant to be a citizen and that is shown clearly in the HBO miniseries of the same name which is now available on DVD and blue ray. He was the second president of the United States after George Washington voluntarily gave up his reigns of power.
If you want to understand John Adams you have to understand the culture, you have to understand how it was to be a farmer in that time period. It was hard being alive in the 1700s and very difficult to survive the long winters. It was not a simpler time it was a different time and of all the things that where different, was this idea that people had a stronger sense of consequences.
You never knew when an epidemic disease was going to sweep through your town and take the lives of your loved ones. It is important to understand that John Adams would never have been what he was, without Abigail. She was constantly encouraging to her husband, often to her own detriment in terms of his company, his support and his presence at home. They spent the first 14 years of their marriage apart.
The fact that all their letters still exist and reveal this intimate communication between the two of them gives the entire mini series a reality that is unparalleled. That collection of letters is one of the greatest windows on another time in existence. You really could get a sense of hardships for both of them during the times of separation.
Whenever she was present in his life he did quite well, he had his troubles when she was not around and he knew that. She had a better sense about politics and she was charming. Even Jefferson was utterly charmed by her. Some people find it too coincidental that John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on the same day, the 4th of July 1826.
