Plain Edge or the new "Godless" dollar of Washington and Adams are all the rage these days, but did you know they where not the first pieces of plain edge U.S. has struck? Here, the author wrote the first "No lettering Edge U.S. Coin, and hope to enlighten on some varieties of plain edge.
The type of piece I'm talking about is a 1797 Liberty Cap, Facing Right, half-cent. The Half Cent Liberty Cap, where struck from 1794-1797, and at that time there a shortage of copper where. Thus, some of these plays a hit Talbot, Allum and Lee Token, because where they are cheaper to acquire copper. Many "Plain Edge" varieties are due to the on-strike, because the chips not edge lettering.
But this is not the only reason.
In response to the shortage of copper President George Washington was a proclamation on 27 December 1795 reducing the weight of cents and half cents. So many theories of coins where made much more thin and did not have the edge lettering. However, a total of 25,600 letters and a half cents were struck on board during this year. It is speculated an additional $ 114,090 and a half cents plain edge dated 1795 were struck in 1796. Obviously, this has led to the half-Cents Plain Edge outnumbering the edges engraved.
Half of the hundred varieties such as Plain Edge are assigned using the system Cohen Variety. COHEN system is the most widely accepted of the appointment or assignment of a letter and a number to each variety half percent. Some examples of how a half-cent would be allocated is C-3a, C-1, C-5B, etc. Obviously, C is the number and designates a state COHEN die.
The man who invented the system is Roger S. Cohen, Jr., in his book "American cents and a half: The half-sister Little." Roger Cohen died but his legacy will live every time a numismatist assigns a half-cent range.
Unlike today, there There was no exaggeration when someone found a Cent Plain Edge half, because the mint provided by these and the collection of diversity is a recent phenomenon. It is more likely that someone merge their copper coins because of the increased value of copper at the time. They where more value for their copper content of their nominal value, and the reason of the above Proclamation.
A total of 8 different Cohen cents Plain Edge and half are accepted date of 1795 and 1797 respectively. With two other possible varieties, one for each year, according to announcements on the website of NGC. The COHEN numbers are as follows: 1795-C 2b, C-3, C-4, C-4-hit, 1797 C-1, C-1 Over-hit, C-2, C-2 Over-hit.
Numismatist should be aware other faiths which struck edge lettering, Hundred Grand (1793-1797), half dollars (1794-1836), Silver Dollars (1794-1803), ST. Gaudens Double Eagles (1907-1933) to mention most of them, and there are varieties Plain Edge is located in the examples above. From there, it should be obvious that Washington and Adams Dollar Plain Edge varieties (EPI) where not the first EPI Dollars.
Of course, the probability of An example is Type Plain Edge unknown distance, it should not prevent collectors search for them. Much can still be awaiting discovered in a dusty old box and stored in the attic or someone, basement. Plus, you can always buy rolls of presidential dollars and if you're lucky, find a real advantage Plain. They do not hold the same value of the original parts EPI, but may be useful in their own right.
But remember, next time you see a hundred Plain Edge half it was the direct result of economic circumstance that the edges plain where hit. Not only that, but the very person who was responsible for the existence of the half-Cents Plain Edge, is also responsible to make it popular with his portrait on the dollar presidential election of 2007.
